  • curiosity (What kinds of robots exist in the world? What are they used for? Are there other ways that robots might be used? How else might you build a robot?)
  • cooperation (you will be working together and taking turns to do this activity)
  • building vocabulary (talk about what you are doing to create the robot, did you know that making this robot is a work of engineering?)

Instructions

  1. Color your robot with the crayons (if you have markers or paint at home that you would rather use, feel free!)
  2. Cut out the robot and tape the two straw pieces onto the back of your robot about 1 inch apart.
  3. Take a piece of string about 4 feet long and thread both ends through the two straw pieces so that you form a giant loop above your robot.
  4. Tie a pony bead onto each end of the string to keep the string from coming out of the straw pieces.
  5. Hang your climbing robot onto a doorknob or from the ceiling.
  6. Grab one bead in each hand and pull out and away from the robot. Watch it move up!
  7. When you've completed this activity (and watched the video above), complete this Exit Ticket Survey so we can gauge your child's understanding of the materials! This is not required but your participation in the survey will qualify you for a free entry in a monthly giveaway contest! Winners will be notified each month if they win! Only one entry per child per survey will be accepted!
  8. Please email info@discoverystation.org with photos of your participation in the activities!
