Discovery Station is pleased to announce that it will be launching an expanded free admission rate in 2019. Starting January 1, 2019, Discovery Station will be free for children ages 5 & under.
According to 2017-18 Kindergarten Readiness Assessment data, only 37% of children in Washington County enter school demonstrating the readiness they need to be successful. By expanding the free admission rate to children that are 5 & under, Discovery Station hopes to provide families and caregivers with information about school readiness and provide children with opportunities to learn through play and to interact with other children.
This new initiative is the result of the collaborative effort of community partners including OnTrack Washington County, the Washington County Early Childhood Advisory Council, the Washington County Birth through Five program and Washington County Public Schools which assisted in the development of Discovery Town, an exhibit focused on fostering school readiness and opened in November of this year.
“Having free access to interactive exhibits like Discovery Town and the others at Discovery Station, will encourage children 5 and under to imagine, play, experiment and explore, all while gaining skills that will prepare them for Kindergarten and beyond.” states Brittany Wedd, director of operations for Discovery Station. “We understand that simply having access to educational tools is instrumental in the development of the children within our community and that the opportunities that we will provide will have a far-reaching impact on the success of generations to come.”
Discovery Station will continue to identify potential grants, sponsors and community partnerships to expand exhibits and programs for early childhood.
