Overview
Explore a world of emotions and art with this Picasso Masterpiece activity! Children will create their own artwork and learn the following skills:
- fine motor skills (cutting, coloring, rolling dice)
- color recognition
- learning emotions (is their face happy? Sad? goofy?)
- number counting and matching
- following simple instructions

Instructions
- Review the examples of paintings by Pablo Picasso and other artists with your child. Ask them what they see with the paintings and how different colors make them feel.!
- You will do this activity with your child, so follow each of the following steps with your own paper.
- Have your child roll the dice and identify the number that’s on top. With the first dice roll, your child will match the face shape with the number they rolled. Have them draw that shape on the paper. Make sure it’s drawn to cover most of the page.
- Have your child roll the dice again and identify the number that’s on the top of the dice. With this roll, your child will match the number with the first eye shape on the guide. Have them draw the shape on one side of the face. Remind them that a lot of Picasso’s paintings are goofy looking and it’s okay if the eye is not in the “right place”.
- Have your child roll the dice again and identify the number that’s on the top of the dice. With this roll, your child will match the number with the second eye shape on the guide. Have them draw the shape on the other side of the face.
- Have your child roll the dice again and identify the number that’s on the top of the dice. With this roll, your child will match the number with the shape of the nose for their portrait. Have them draw this shape in the middle of the face.
- After your child has drawn their nose, they should then draw a line down the center of the face. With this step, demonstrate to your child the steps they’ll take to draw the line from the top of the face down to the top of the nose. Then connect the bottom of the nose to the bottom of the face.
- Next, they will add a mouth to their face. Ask your child if they want the mouth to be on the left side of the face or the right. Have your child roll the dice again and identify the number that’s on the top of the dice. With this roll, your child will match the number with the shape of their mouth for their portrait. Have them draw this shape on whichever side of the face they want their mouth to be on.
- Have your child roll the dice again and identify the number that’s on the top of the dice. With this roll, your child will match the number with the shape of the first ear for their portrait. Have them draw it on their face. Remind them that it is okay for it to look silly and “out of place”.
- Have your child roll the dice again and identify the number that’s on the top of the dice. With this last roll, your child will match the number with the shape of the second ear for their portrait. Have them draw the ear on the other side of the face.
- Now it’s time to color in the face! Have your child pick out their favorite colors. They will use different colors on different parts of the face!
- When you've completed this activity (and watched the video above), complete this Exit Ticket Survey so we can gauge your child's understanding of the materials! Extend the Learning:
This is a fun activity to pair with music. Play music in the background and ask your child how the music makes them feel or if the music influences the colors they choose to color with. Does the music make them want to color faster or slower? Use the mirror in the kit and ask your child to draw the emotions they see on their face!

Instructiones
- Vea con sus hijos los ejemplos de pinturas hechas por Pablo Picasso. Pregúnteles qué ven en las pinturas y cómo los hacen sentir.
- Hará esta actividad junto a su hijo, así que siga cada uno de los pasos en su propio papel.
- Haga que su hijo tire los dados e identifique el número que esta arriba. Con la primera tirada de dados su hijo pareara la forma de la cara con el número que lanzó. Dibujen esa forma en el papel. Asegurese que el dibujo cubra la mayor parte de la página.
- Vuelva a lanzar el dado e identifiquen el número en la parte superior del mismo. En este turno su hijo hará el primer ojo que se encuentra en la guía. Haga que dibujen la forma en un lado de la cara. Recuérdeles que muchas de las pinturas de Picasso se ven graciosas y está bien que el ojo no esté en el lugar correcto.
- Haga que su hijo vuelva a tirar los dados e identifique el número en la parte superior del mismo. En este turno busque en la guía el número correspondiente al segundo ojo y dibújenlo en el otro lado de la cara.
- Haga que su hijo vuelva a lanzar los dados e identifique el número en la parte superior del mismo. En este turno encuentra la nariz que le corresponde al número y añádala al dibujo.
- Después de que su hijo haya dibujado la nariz, debe trazar una línea en el centro de la cara la misma debe ser desde la parte superior de la cara hasta la parte superior de la nariz. Demuéstrele a su hijo como hacerlo. Luego haga lo mismo conectando la parte inferior de la nariz con la parte inferior de la cara.
- En este paso agregaran una boca a su cara. Pregúntele a su hijo si quiere que la boca este en el lado izquierdo de la cara o en el derecho. Tiren los dados nuevamente identificando el número en la parte superior. En este turno identifiquen en la guía el número correspondiente a la forma de la boca. Tiren los dados nuevamente e idenfiquen el número en la parte superior esta vez busquen el número que corresponde a la oreja. Siempre recordándoles que está bien aunque se vea tonto o “fuera de lugar”. Haga lo mismo para la siguiente oreja. ¡Ahora es el momento de colorear la cara! Seleccionen sus colores favoritos asegurándose de usar diferentes colores en diferentes partes de la cara.
Extensión de Aprendizaje: Hagan esta actividad con música de fondo y pregúntele a su hijo como la música los hace sentir o si la música tuvo que ver con los colores que escogió. ¿Crees que la música hace que colorees más rápido o más lento?
