Learning MoneyDownload

Instructions

  1. Remove the fake money from the kit and help your child separate the coins by type into piles.
  2. Using the money identification guide, review what each type of coin is and identify how many of each coin type are required to make a dollar.
  3. Help your child count $1.00 piles out using the chart that looks like the one to the right (except for pennies).
  4. When your child is comfortable identifying coins and the number of each type of coin that would make a dollar, proceed to cutting out the pig from the pig print.
  5. Glue the pig to the plastic cup. This will represent their “piggy bank”.
  6. Cut the money combo cards along their rectangles. Lay them face down.
  7. One by one, turn a card over. Identify the money amount that is on the card and model to your child how to count out the correct amount of coins that will equal the amount that’s on the card.
  8. Have your child select the amount of coins needed to equal that amount and have them place it in their “piggy bank”.
  9. Repeat these steps until all of the cards have been flipped over.
  10. When you've completed this activity (and watched the video above), complete this Exit Ticket Survey so we can gauge your child's understanding of the materials! This is not required but your participation in the survey will qualify you for a free entry in a monthly giveaway contest! Winners will be notified each month if they win! Only one entry per child per survey will be accepted!
  11. Please email info@discoverystation.org with photos of your participation in the activities!

Extend the learning: What other money combinations can you make using the coins? Work through the money bills. How many one-dollar bills make up a five-dollar bill? A ten-dollar bill? A twenty?
